Sands is working to improve care of babies and parents:

  • during pregnancy
  • when a problem is recognised
  • when a baby has died

Above all we want to ensure that as few babies as possible die and that parents are spared the pain and grief which follows a baby’s death.

We want to see:

  • More research into the medical conditions causing stillbirths and neonatal deaths.

In particular we want to see research into the cases where no cause of a baby’s death is found. This circumstance applies to over 50% of all stillbirths.

  • Improvements in medical care, particularly in monitoring, of mothers and babies during pregnancy.

CESDI has assessed that in 45% of all cases of stillbirth different care might have resulted on a different outcome.

When a baby has died, much can be done to ensure that what happens next leaves the parents with as few regrets as possible.

We want to see:

The quality of care following a baby’s death can have a lasting impact on the ability of parents to cope with their loss.

  • Attention drawn to practice in areas other than health care, which directly affect bereaved parents.

This includes post mortems; registration of a stillbirth or neonatal death; burials and cremations.

Sometimes members tell us that they feel put off contacting the UK office, not being sure who they might speak to or what sort of things they might talk to us about. Once they do get in touch they realise that in fact we are a small team of friendly, approachable people, operating from a very modest basement office (don’t be fooled by the glamorous address).

We always like to hear from you, whether you want support, information, ideas, a listening ear; whether it is about your personal experience, your experience running a group, talking to health professionals, fundraising, or anything else. It is important for us to hear about what you are doing around the country, as individuals or groups: whether it a success story or it is about the frustrations and difficulties you are experiencing.

We look forward to hearing from you!
